The IIT-P and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), a central government body, on Tuesday inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for setting up the supercomputer under the Centre’s National Supercomputing Mission (NSM), funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) and Department of Science and Technology (DST).
A similar supercomputer (of 833 TF) was recently installed at IIT-BHU and other four (of 833 TF) are proposed to be installed at IIT-Guwahati, IIT-Gandhinagar, IIT-Mandi and NIT-Trichy.
The MoU was signed by Prof T N Singh, Director, IIT-Patna and Shri E Magesh, Director General (DG) C-DAC in presence of the nodal officer Prof Somanath Tripathy, Dr Snehasis Das Chakraborty and team of C-DAC officials.
“As per the MoU, the supercomputer will be commissioned at IIT-Patna’s Bihta based campus by September this year. Its infrastructure will be based on Rudra server which is indigenously designed, manufactured and assembled in India in line with one of the ambitious initiatives “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat”. This facility will enhance the research and development (R&D) of the IIT Patna as well as the other organisations in the eastern part of India,” the IIT-P spokesperson Kripa Shankar Singh told TOI on Tuesday.
“The objective of national supercomputing mission (NSM) is to empower technology institutions with high performing computing facility which can be used in various applications including artificial intelligence, cyber security, computational dynamics, weather modelling, disaster recovery, drug discovery, molecular dynamics, machine learning etc,” a C-DAC official said.
The C-DAC director general E Magesh expressed his gratitude towards IIT-Patna for all support and said, “This initiative will go a long way for the students and researchers in creating useful software and solutions for path breaking outcomes.”
Prof T N Singh, Director IIT-Patna, said that this supercomputer would be a milestone and it would enhance high-level of data computation for various purposes.
