‘Idyllic’ Oxfordshire town named one of the prettiest in the country – ‘little gem’

There are no shortage of picturesque towns and villages in the Cotswolds. The quintessentially English area attracts droves of visitors intent on exploring chocolate box villages and picture perfect high streets full of independent shops.

However, one town in the Cotswolds has been singled out for being one of the prettiest in the country.

Dubbed the “Gateway to the Cotswolds”, Burford has everything holidaymakers may want for a UK holiday spot.

Burford made its money in wool, and even if the wool trade is no longer the main activity of the town, it’s kept its historic character and beautiful buildings.

The town was voted sixth best place to live in Europe by Forbes Magazine in 2010.

Burford’s High Street leads to the River Windrush.

Over the river is a beautiful medieval bridge with three arches.

The town is famous for its old stone houses, Tudor and Georgian frontages and independent shops.

England’s oldest pharmacy, Reaveley Chemist, has been in town since 1734.

The 16th century Tolsey building was the meeting place of merchants in Tudor times.

It now houses the Tolsey Museum and it’s the perfect place to learn about local history.

The museum is open from April to October in the afternoon.

On Tripadvisor, Linda B said: “Amazing history.

“Such an insight into the history of the locality with artefacts and info boards.”

The parish church of St John the Baptist was in the top 20 of Simon Jenkins’s England’s Thousand Best Churches.

The mainly 15th century church has plenty of history, with three Levellers ringleaders executed by Cromwell’s men in the churchyard.

Tracey A said: “A stunning historical church in this idyllic area within the Oxfordshire Cotswold region.”

The Burford Leveller martyrs are celebrated on Levellers Day, which takes place every May on the weekend nearest the anniversary of the execution.

Burford is ideally located in the Cotswolds, and holidaymakers can use the town as a base to explore the wider area.

The Windrush Valley Cycle Route goes through Burford, and there are also many walks that can be taken from the town.

Easily accessible from Burford, the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens and Crocodiles of the World are two attractions that should please the entire family.
