I went to Britain’s worst motorway service station – I was shocked at what I saw
THIS motorway service station has been dubbed the worst in Britain and leaves visitors stunned by its lack of facilities.
Hartshead Moor East services sits on the M62 near Huddersfield, Yorkshire and was ranked bottom in a table of 119 services, according to a survey of 31,000 people by watchdog Transport Focus.
Despite sitting on one of the busiest routes across the Pennines connecting Yorkshire to Lancashire, the services received an overall satisfaction rating of just 80%.
While that may seem relatively high it puts it firmly at the bottom of the leaderboard.
When Yorkshire Live’s Megan Banner visited, she was struck first by the sheer lack of options available.
She reported thinking “is this it?” as she pulled into the small service station.
The main attractions are reportedly two Starbucks, a Burger King and a Subway, with very little else besides.
Even within these limited options, the shelves in Starbucks were allegedly bare except for two croissants, a small selection of biscuits and cakes left on the counter and what Megan described as “some very sad looking paninis”.
Beyond food and drink there is a “tiny” WH Smith, where you can buy “overly priced” Cadbury’s chocolate, and a Days Inn Hotel, as well as some betting shops.
However, there were some positives in the experience.
While, admitting that book options were limited to the like of Paris Fury’s autobiography and a road map of Leeds, the magazine selections was reportedly excellent.
Moreover, the overall satisfaction rating was likely boosted by the fact that 75 per cent of visitors were satisfied with the loos.
According to Megan: “They weren’t the cleanest and they definitely weren’t the dirtiest – I have for sure been in worse service station toilets.
“And on a positive note they did have those fancy new Dyson Airblade hand dryers and sensor taps.”
There was also apparently a good amount of seating and a patio which would be lovely in the summer.
For those who aren’t keen to stick around, it is also very easy to leave as a quick loop around the truck stop gets you back on the M62.
Overall though, Megan said: “I have visited some much better services in my 24 years of living, and can probably understand why its been dubbed as the worst in Britain.
“it was a pretty miserable looking place.”
