Hyundai will offer monthlong subscriptions to its popular electric vehicles as part of a program called Evolve+.
Evolve+ will cost subscribers $699 per month for the Kona Electric or $899 for the Ioniq 5.
Both electric compact crossovers helped the Korean automaker capture early market share in the still-developing EV market. Hyundai hopes this program will help spur additional EV adoption.
The program also acknowledges the changing landscape of car ownership.
As the market “moves from early adopters to mass adoption, different consumers will have different needs,” Olabisi Boyle, vice president, product planning and mobility strategy for Hyundai Motor North America, told Automotive News during an interview at the Chicago Auto Show.
Boyle said Evolve+ is a viable option for buyers who want to see how accessible charging is in their area as well as for short-term needs, such as a college student home for their three-month summer break.
In addition to month-to-month flexibility, the package includes 1,000 miles, insurance, maintenance, registration and roadside assistance. There is no minimum contract beyond the 28-day period, and customers can cancel anytime.
The package will only be offered in six states by eight pilot dealers in Oregon, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland and South Carolina. Hyundai said more will be added by year end.
“Evolve+ gives our customers the opportunity to try an electric vehicle and see if it is right for their lifestyle,” Gary Rome, president of Gary Rome Auto Group, said in a statement. Gary Rome Hyundai in Holyoke, Mass., is a participating dealer.
Interested shoppers can select their vehicle and payment terms via mobile app, and then pick the vehicle up at the participating dealership.
