St George-Illawarra will be without their skipper Ben Hunt just when they need him most after it was confirmed the Dragons halfback fractured his arm yesterday.
Hunt suffered the injury during the Dragons’ 50-14 NRL loss to South Sydney at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Hunt doesn’t require surgery “but will miss at least the next month”, the Dragons said in a statement.
With the Dragons sitting in ninth with five regular-season games remaining, they have lost their million dollar-per-season playmaker as they fight for a finals spot.
In fact, it looks likely Hunt will only return to the field this season if St George-Illawarra make the top eight to qualify for the finals.
The Dragons – who have lost their last three games convincingly – face a tricky run home including games against Penrith, the Sydney Roosters and the Rabbitohs.
It’s all gone pear-shaped since the party at Paul Vaughan’s house at the start of July that breached NSW’s COVID restrictions.
It led to Vaughan being sacked by the club, and the prop has since signed a one-year contract with the Bulldogs in 2022.
