Spoilers ahead for Glass Onion. You have been warned
It brilliant scenes to see out 2022, Hugh Grant appeared in Netflix’s Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion, in what may be deemed a superior film cameo.
Now he’s spoken out about his small but mighty appearance in Rian Johnson’s whodunit, in which he played husband to Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc.
His voice made the first entry, in the beginning of the tale, calling to Blanc through their bathroom door as the famous detective played Among Us on Zoom with Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, Natasha Lyonne and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. (Yes, the cameos are plentiful.)
He later makes a proper appearance towards the end, as the film begins to draw to its conclusion, as Helen Brand (played by Janelle Monáe) turns up at Blanc’s apartment, and is greeted by Grant’s Philip, toting a jar of sourdough starter. Lockdown vibes, and all.
Asked about the cameo and his role of Blanc’s partner, he said: ‘It is true, I’m married to James Bond.’
Grant added in the interview with Collider: ‘It’s the tiniest little moment. I don’t really know why they wanted to do it but anyway, I thought Knives Out 1 was brilliant, and so yeah, I thought why not? I turn up for a few hours…’
Director Johnson previously confirmed the film’s detective is gay and that in this latest film we’d see him living with another man.
Speaking on a panel alongside his stars on the actor in question, he kept quiet, but added: ‘And there’s nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with,’ while Craig added: ‘No spoilers [but] who wouldn’t want to live with that person?’
The James Bond actor is back as Southern detective Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Johnson’s sequel to his 2019 hit.
In the much-anticipated sequel, Blanc is mysteriously invited to a Greek island owned by tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton) and a number of Miles’ close friends to partake in an extravagant murder mystery party. But of course, before long, the renowned detective’s skills are needed for a genuine murder case. Naturally.
