How SNY leaned into Frank the Tank coverage before Mets home run
Against all odds, Frank “The Tank” Fleming might be the Mets’ new good luck charm.
The SNY broadcast showed Frank just as Brandon Nimmo hit his ninth homer of the season to give the Mets a 1-0 advantage against the Brewers at the bottom of the fourth on their way to a much-needed 7-2 victory Tuesday.
The blogger and vlogger from Barstool is recognized as the angriest Mets fan –– never shy to let it rip on the struggling squad –– but his on-screen appearance came at a fortuitous time for the reeling Mets.
Francisco Lindor proceeded to hammer his 200th career home run one batter later and Nimmo went yard again in the bottom of the fifth, marking the fourth time in his career the left-fielder has hit two homers in a game.
The Mets had two wins in their past nine games prior to Wednesday’s triumph.
John DeMarsico, the Mets director for SNY, played into the Frank “The Tank” bit by putting him on the broadcast, and posted a behind-the-scenes video of how it all happened on Twitter.
“A report on dealing with fan criticism? There’s only one man to shoot. Here’s how the moment came together in the truck,” DeMarsico said in the tweet.
Someone in the truck can be heard saying “Oh, that’ll be everywhere” with a laugh when Fleming hit the screens.
Frank “The Tank,” who showed up to Tuesday’s game wearing a paper bag on his head with “Worst Team Money Can Buy” written across it, finally had something to cheer about –– or, more accurately, not scream about.
Following the Mets’ June 20 loss to the Astros, Frank went on an on-brand rant on Twitter.
“Mets just can’t f–king win. They don’t win two in a row, they don’t win series, you know the Mets are going to lose tomorrow,” he yelled in the video. “This year is a total disaster. They have to start evaluating now for next year. It begins with getting rid of bums.”
Then, after another brutal loss on Monday, he went into an even more unhinged rant.
With Tuesday’s win, the Mets now hold a 36-43 record.
Team general manager Billy Eppler addressed the media on Tuesday ahead of the game and expressed confidence and faith in both his players and coaching staff, signaling no major personnel changes coming.
Team owner Steve Cohen will meet with the media before Wednesday’s game.
The Mets have a chance to gain some momentum with two more games against the Brewers at Citi Field this week.
More home runs, better pitching and Frank “The Tank” might be the cure to the Mets’ slump.
