Holiday warning for Spain’s Canary Islands due to extreme weather

The UK Government has issued a travel warning for Britons travelling to one of Spain’s Canary Islands due to Storm Oscar.

It said: “Storm Oscar is forecast to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the Canary Islands between Monday June 5 and Thursday June 8.

“There are weather warnings in place, please see the website of the Spanish Meteorological Agency for details.

“You should check with your tour operator or accommodation provider before you travel and follow the instructions of local authorities.”

The local Government in the Canary Islands has put the emergency services on alert due to the adverse weather.

The north of Tenerife and La Palma could be hit by strong winds in excess of 90km/h from midnight on Tuesday.

An orange weather warning is in place in Tenerife and La Palma with the islands’ northwest summits and peaks most likely to be affected.

AEMET has issued a yellow warning in the western Canary Islands which covers La Gomera, El Hierro and Gran Canaria.

The local meteorological agency has warned people to stay aware and keep up to date with the latest forecast.

It warned that property could face moderate damage especially in vulnerable and exposed areas.

Tourists travelling to Portugal have also been warned with Madeira, Porto Santo and the Azores most likely to be affected.

Britons have been advised to follow the advice of local authorities and check for information from their holiday provider or tour operator.

The weather warnings are in place for Tuesday and Wednesday so tourists should take particular care travelling to any of the areas on those days.

The heavy storm could damage scaffolding and cranes or cause bins and street furniture to move.
