H&M x Iris Apfel drops tomorrow and it’s as perfectly maximalist as we hoped

Style icon Iris Apfel designed the maximalist (yet affordable) collection alongside H&M (Picture: H&M)

Iris Apfel is an icon of the fashion game, starting in interior design (providing textiles for the White House across nine US presidencies) and ending up as the face of her own documentary and with a sell-out Costume Institute exhibition.

She’s known for her maximalist personal style, which is what led to her being signed to a modelling agency the tender age of 97.

And to celebrate her 100th birthday, Iris is releasing a collaboration with H&M, letting us capture her standout technicolour aesthetic without a couture budget.

The 38-piece collection is released tomorrow (March 31), embodying the unique and distinctive looks favoured by the ‘First Lady of Fabric’.

Where Coco Chanel said ‘before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off,’ Iris’s outlook has always been ‘more is more’ and ‘wear what makes you feel great’.

Statement round glasses and voluminous shapes are her signature, as is chunky jewellery with unexpected motifs like bugs or fruit – and thankfully for fans of her ‘extra’ outfits, this limited edition line is Apfel to a T.

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she described the designs as ‘playful but also glamorous, and a bit over the top,’ adding that the range features ‘beautiful jacquard fabrics, embroidery, ruffles, lovely prints, fringes for the fun of it, and huge tulle swirls.’

Think rainbow-hued enamel bangles covered in sparkly frogs, brocade slippers with jewelled beetle embellishments, and oversized suiting options that could be worn as loungewear or just as easily paired with heels for elegant, formal events.

Floral prints and a mix of masculine and feminine shapes define the collection (Picture: H&M)

Prices start at £19.99 for an orange swimsuit with 100 on the front, while the most expensive piece in the collection is a purple flounced jacket for £229.99.

Not typical H&M prices, but certainly more affordable than some previous high-profile collabs.

We’ve rounded up some our favourites from the H&M x Iris Apfel drop, so you have any favourites in your basket and ready to go.
