Hisar Agri University scientists identify new disease in sorghum millet – Times of India

Scientists of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University (CCSHAU), Hisar have identified a new disease namely Klebsiella leaf streak on sorghum. Such a disease in sorghum millet has been discovered for the first time on the global platform.
B R Kamboj, Vice-Chancellor, CCSHAU congratulated the team of scientists for this achievement. Kamboj said that timely identification of emerging threats to crop cultivation has become important in the changing agricultural scenario. He further asked the scientists to keep a strict vigil on further spread of the disease.
University Director of Research Dr Jeet Ram Sharma said that the scientists spotted the disease for the first time during Kharif 2018 season in Hisar, now being observed in Mohindergarh and Rohtak regions too. After a hard work of four years, experts could achieve this. Head of the Department Dr H S Saharan emphasised that early identification of disease will be helpful in developing a strategic breeding programme.
The chief researcher and varsity Plant Pathologist Dr Vinod Kumar Malik informed that research report on “Klebsiella leaf streak disease of sorghum” has been accepted as first report of this disease during December, 2022 by American Phytopathological Society, USA which is among oldest international scientific organization devoted to the study of plant diseases. The authors will be first authority of this disease in the world. Malik added that based on several morphological, biochemical, molecular and pathogenicity tests we could prove that a bacterium Klebsiella variicola is the cause of this disease. The disease appears in the form of small to long streaks on leaves. The reddish-brown streaks are observed in the interveinal spaces of upper and lower leaves. Over time, neighboring streaks coalesced to form large dead areas.
CCS HAU scientists Dr Manjeet Ghanghas, Dr Pooja Sangwan, Dr Pummy Kumari, Dr Bajrang Lal Sharma, Dr Pavitra Kumari, Dr Dalvinder Pal Singh, Dr Satyawan Aryaand Dr Navjeet Ahalawat also significantly contributed in this project.
