Gunslinger Spawn Gets Ongoing Series From McFarlane, Booth and More

Written by Todd McFarlane and Aleš Kot, Gunslinger Spawn #1 tosses the revolver-toting Hellspawn from the Wild West into the 21st Century.

The fan-favorite Hellspawn from the Old West returns in a new ongoing series in October with Gunslinger Spawn #1.

Written by Image Comics president and Spawn creator Todd McFarlane with backup stories by Aleš Kot (Lost Soldiers, Zero), the first issue of the series sees Jeremy Winston — who lived about 200 years prior to the current Spawn, Al Simmons — unwillingly pulled into the 21st century by forces beyond his control. With firearms blazing, Gunslinger Spawn has to navigate a strange new world but also confront demons from his past as he attempts to find a way home.

“Gunslinger Spawn returns with a vengeance, and he will make Spawn look like a Boy Scout,” McFarlane said. “Finally, fans will get a glimpse into his history as we dig deeper into his past and explore his future.”

Brett Booth (The Flash, Titans) serves as the lead pencils artist on the book, with Philip Tan, Kevin Keane and Thomas Nachlik also providing art. Gunslinger Spawn #1 will ship with a wide variety of variant covers by the likes of longtime Spawn penciler Greg Capullo, art director and occasional Spawn cover artist Tonton Revolver, The Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman and the legendary John Romita Jr.

Gunslinger Spawn first debuted in Spawn #119 as part of a two-page spread showcasing Hellspawn from across history. He later received an origin story in the pages of Spawn Issues 174 and 175. A former preacher framed for the murder of his family, Jeremy Winston accepted a deal from the demon Mammon and rained violent vengeance down upon the town of Bane, Colorado, executing all citizens except for Al Simmons’ ancestor Francis Parker, who would later change his name to Henry Simmons.

Jeremy Winston’s ongoing series is the second Spawn book spinning out of the June one-shot Spawn’s Universe. It follows King Spawn, which had a first issue that garnered nearly 500,000 orders before it hit comic book store shelves in August. Image’s next Spawn ongoing will be a team-up book featuring various Hellspawn entitled The Scorched, with its first issue set for release in December.

King Spawn #1’s multitude of orders made it the single largest superhero monthly title launch in the last 25 years, beating multiple DC and Marvel books starring the likes of Batman, Superman and Captain America. McFarlane called its success proof that “the character Spawn and the world he lives in still resonates to fans almost thirty years after I first introduced him.”

Gunslinger Spawn #1 releases on Oct. 20 from Image Comics.
