Gujarat University invites applications for VC’s post – Times of India

The Gujarat University has started accepting applications for the post of its next vice chancellor as the term of the current VC ends in June. The last date to apply is June 19. On May 23, the University Grants Commission (UGC) had appointed Ramshankar Kuril, the vice-chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University, Chhattisgarh, as its representative in the Gujarat University’s search committee for the next vice-chancellor.
The state education department had recently issued a notification to all government universities to include a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in their search committee for selecting candidates for vice chancellors’ positions. The notification says that as per UGC notification dated July 18, 2018, and an order by the Supreme Court of India dated March 3, 2022, it is mandatory for universities to include a UGC member in their VC search committees. The order said that the search committees that have already been constituted by universities will also have to include a UGC member.
GU has recently appointed Shashikant Sharma, the vice chancellor of Himachal Pradesh University has been appointed as the third member of the search committee to select candidates for the next GU vice-chancellor. Sharma has been appointed as the representative of the state governor on this committee. Earlier, the Joint Board of Vice Chancellors (JBVC) had selected Madhukar Padvi, the vice chancellor of Birsa Munda Tribal University, Rajpipla as the second member of the three-member search committee.
Prior to that Chetan Trivedi, the in-charge vice chancellor of Junagadh University was appointed on the committee by the university syndicate and academic council.
Sources said that as the search committee is now complete, the university has started accepting applications.
Sources said that earlier the university had appointed two VCs who were from other states Naresh Vaid and Adesh Pal but both of them had to resign from the post after controversies. So, it is likely that local candidates may be preferred this year, sources said.
