Guardians Of The Galaxy lead writer now works at BioWare

The team that made the Guardians Of The Galaxy video game has already been split up, with the senior narrative director moving to BioWare.

Square Enix selling Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics and Guardians Of The Galaxy developer Eidos-Montréal is one of the biggest news stories of the year so far, but new owner Embracer Group is still yet to explain what it’s going to do with them.

It seems unlikely that it would still get to use the Guardians Of The Galaxy licence, which must’ve cost Square Enix a fortune, but now any potential sequel is never going to be quite the same, as senior narrative director Mary DeMarle has left to go and work at BioWare.

It’s not clear if she’ll work on Dragon Age or Mass Effect, or potentially something else, but we were very impressed with her when we interviewed her ahead of the 2022 BAFTA awards, in which Guardians Of The Galaxy was, quite rightly, nominated.

The news is a bit of a surprise, not because there was any indication of DeMarle’s intentions but because usually when companies buy developers there’s a clause to make sure top staff don’t leave straight away.

That clearly hasn’t happened here, so it’s presumably possible that other key developers might leave from both Eidos-Montréal and Crystal Dynamics.

De Marle had been at Eidos-Montréal for over 10 years and before working on Guardians Of The Galaxy was also involved in Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Mankind Divided.

It seems quite possible Embracer will seek to revive the Deus Ex franchise in the future but it’ll now have to do so without some of the key staff from the original games.

What intentions they have for Tomb Raider is also unclear, but they’ll presumably continue the work that was already started on the next game, which is said to unite the timelines from the classic and more modern games.

That new game is believed to be several years out at this point, so it’s hard to guess when it, or a new project from Eidos-Montréal, might be unveiled in public.
