James Gunn is currently working on The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as well as The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The filmmaker has teased some details about the Holiday Special on Twitter.
In reference to The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, Gunn said, “In my incredibly subjective & admittedly often odd opinion, we’ll be introducing one of the greatest MCU characters of all time.” Gunn has previously revealed where the Holiday Special fits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. He confirmed that it will take place after the events of Thor: Love and Thunder, but before The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3.

Gunn has finished the script of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and it will release on Disney Plus Hotstar in 2022. Meanwhile, The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will release in 2023. Gunn has confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will be his last movie in the franchise. The director has also said that it will “probably be the last with the current team” including Peter Quill, Drax, Gamora, Groot, Rocket, Nebula, and Mantis.
Gunn has recently teased the story of Guardians of the Galaxy 3. He said, “For Guardians 3, the script has basically been written for a long time. I’ve been playing with it in little ways over the years, but it’s basically stayed the same since three years ago. It’s pretty heavy actually. It’s a heavier story, so it’s an emotional process to go through.”
