Green Lantern’s Secret Steve Buscemi Cameo Was Forgotten (for Good Reason)

Green Lantern’s short-lived, evil version of Steve Buscemi was a bizarre creative choice that would make an awesome addition to the DCEU.

Throughout his impressive career, actor Steve Buscemi has appeared in everything from The Sopranos to 30 Rock. He’s known for his humorous and layered performances like Donny in The Big Lebowski and even God in Miracle Workers. But, the prolific performer’s strangest appearance is in DC’s Green Lantern Corps, where his evil alien twin is an active member of the Sinestro Corps.

Peter J Tomasi, Patrick Gleason and Rebecca Buchman’s 2009 Green Lantern Corps #33 features a purple-skinned, Yellow Lantern named Imecsub, who is being held prisoner by two Green Lanterns on their spaceship as they navigate Sector 2815. Despite his battle wounds and colorful skin, Imecsub looks quite a bit like an evil version of Steve Buscemi. Even the name Imecsub is just Buscemi spelled backward. It is easy to hear the character claiming to be a brilliant criminal mastermind in Buscemi’s familiar voice. He rants and raves about how he meant for the Green Lanterns to capture him, and how they have fallen into his dastardly trap. The Lanterns certainly don’t seem convinced, but it is an entertaining rant. For better or worse, Imecsub’s time in the DC Universe is cut remarkably short. When the Lanterns’ ship collides with another, the villainous Buscemi look-a-like is killed instantly.

Everything about Imecsub’s appearance is bizarre. There is little information about the circumstances surrounding his initial capture, and the Green Lanterns pretty much ignore his death. For that matter, the Yellow Lanterns never seem to acknowledge his death either. Imecsub is only alive for two pages of the comic, but his corpse is visible for a while. All in all, it is just an odd moment. The only apparent reason for the character is for the brief homage to Buscemi and for a darkly humorous death scene, reminiscent of the fates of many of Buscemi’s characters in the Coen Brothers’ movies.

As strange and brief as Buscemi’s cameo in the comic is, it could set an exciting precedent for his involvement with the DC Universe. While Imecsub wasn’t a great addition to the Green Lantern Corps comics, the character could be a fun addition to the upcoming Green Lantern live-action series in production at HBO Max. Buscemi’s talents would add to the show’s already impressive cast and would be a fun Easter egg for diehard comics fans. Even if Buscemi didn’t play Imecsub, it is easy to imagine him playing a grizzled member of the Sinestro Corps or lending his voice acting skills to bring an interstellar character to life. Although the actor might not be the most likely superhero, his incredible range and sense of humor would make him an asset to any production and could add an interesting dynamic to the show.

Steve Buscemi’s comic book alter-ego Imecsub never amounted to much in spite of the character’s delusions of grandeur.  The Yellow Lantern existed briefly as a strange joke and little else. His quick and accidental death made it easy to forget the character ever existed.

However, the upcoming Green Lantern show could capitalize on this bizarre moment in DC history to bring the incredible performer into the DCEU. At this stage in his career, Buscemi might not be searching for work as a side character in the DC Universe – but Imecsub would certainly be more interesting in film than on paper.
