Golfer drops club in disgust as rare feat plays out

Mark Hubbard’s reaction to his tee shot at the par-3 11th hole at the Rocket Mortgage Classic said it all.

“That’s embarrassing,” he moaned, dropping his club, and his head, in frustration.

Only it wasn’t. The ball was heading straight for the hole.

“Dude, that better not go in,” said playing partner Wyndham Clark.

Which is exactly what happened. Never looked like missing really.

“I mean, honestly, it was pretty embarrassing,” Hubbard said after his round of 4-under 68.

“Didn’t quite know where the ball was going today. Taking a week off and whatever I just didn’t feel as spot on and I think I let go of the club on about three of the last four shots as well and they all ended up OK. I just felt really stuck and I thought it was going to be way right of the green.

“I looked up and it was a perfect 1-yard draw. It landed and trickled in like a putt. Yeah, I think that’s probably going to end up being one of my favourite hole-in-ones I ever had just because of the situation.”

It’s Hubbard’s second ace on the PGA Tour, and his 68 left him four shots behind first round leaders, Tony Finau and Taylor Pendrith. Hubbard is level with the defending champion, Australia’s Cam Davis.

First round scores:

64 – Tony Finau and Taylor Pendrith

65 – Michael Thompson, Webb Simpson, Cameron Champ, Lee Hodges and Matt Wallace.

Australians:

68 – Cam Davis

69 – Jason Day and Adam Scott

70 – Aaron Baddeley

73 – Cameron Percy

74 – Geoff Ogilvy

80 – Brett Drewitt
