Glen Johnson has told Chelsea they shouldn’t be held to ransom by Mason Mount but fears he could be key to hopes of signing Declan Rice in the summer.

The England international has been a key figure under the last three Chelsea managers and looks certain to remain a pivotal part of Graham Potter’s long-term plans.

Todd Boehly made it one of his priorities upon assuming control of the west London club to secure the futures of academy graduates Reece James and Mount.

James committed his future to his boyhood club back in September when he signed a six-year deal, but negotiations with Mount have reached an impasse and been shelved until next year.

Mount is currently one of the lowest paid first team players at Chelsea and wants a salary to reflect his status as one of new manager Graham Potter’s key players.

Chelsea are desperate to retain the services of 23-year-old who has been earmarked as a future club captain but the prospect of a move to Premier League rivals Liverpool may prove appealing.

Mount is said to want £300,000-a-week but former Chelsea defender Johnson believes the gifted midfielder does not warrant that level of pay.

Chelsea have been regularly linked with Mount’s great friend and international teammate, Rice, and Johnson fears they may need to cave to their academy graduate’s demands in order to entice the West Ham skipper in the summer.

He said: ‘I don’t think he’s got to the level to demand £300,000-a-week.

‘Obviously he’s a good player and Chelsea won’t want to lose him but you can’t be held hostage to anyone. I can’t imagine he’s the sort of lad that would down tools if he doesn’t get £300,000-a-week.

‘He doesn’t seem like that sort of fella. I don’t believe that’s true, so I think they’ll come to an arrangement eventually.

‘Chelsea may have to keep Mount tactically if they do want to sign Declan Rice as well.’
