LAURA Trott became chief secretary to the treasury in Rishi Sunak’s November 2023 Cabinet reshuffle.
Here we take a look at her career, husband and children.
Who is Laura Trott?
Laura Trott MBE was born on December 7, 1984 in Oxted, Surrey, England.
A rising star in the Conservative Party, she was a former special adviser to David Cameron from 2009, but left Number 10 following his defeat in the 2016 EU referendum.
She became a director at political consultancy and PR agency Portland for two years while pursuing her ambition to join the House of Commons.
When former defence secretary Sir Michael Fallon announced he would not seek re-election in the 2019 General Election, Laura was chosen as the Conservative candidate in Sevenoaks.
Ms Trott entered Parliament as the MP for Sevenoaks — a historically safe Conservative seat, which was held by Sir Fallon from 1997 — winning with a 20,000-vote majority.
She joined the Commons health and social care committee, during the time it was closely examining the Government’s actions during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ms Trott became a Parliamentary private secretary to the Department of Transport, but quit when Boris Johnson’s administration collapsed, going on to become an early supporter of Rishi Sunak’s bid to replace him as prime minister.
After Liz Truss’ record-breakingly short stint as PM, Mr Sunak appointed Laura to the position of parliamentary under secretary of state at the Department for Work and Pensions between October 27, 2022 and November 13, 2023.
She was then appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury in a major cabinet reshuffle by the prime minister on November 13, 2023.
Who is Laura Trott’s husband Bids Mahvelati?
Bahador Mahvelati, who goes by the nickname Bids, was born in August 1978.
He studied economics and econometrics at the University of Nottingham, before going on to complete a masters in decision sciences at The London School of Economics and Political Science.
After graduating he worked at UBS Investment Bank, then became a supply chain and procurement consultant at State of Flux, moving on to Booz & Company as an associate, before returning to UBS as a director.
Bids has worked at PricewaterhousCoopers since 2014, where he has held the roles of senior manager, director and partner of strategy and operations — the role he still occupies.
Do Laura and Bids have any children?
Yes, Laura and Bids do have children.
They reportedly have three kids — a daughter and twin sons.
It seems they prefer to keep their children out of the public spotlight.
