George Harrison’s beautiful question to Ringo Starr in final meeting before death

The Beatles’ lead guitarist, George Harrison, died on this day, November 29, 20 years ago in 2001. The star had been suffering from a brain tumour and had been treated at a clinic in Switzerland in July 2001. During this time, Ringo Starr visited the former member of the Fab Four.

Ringo recalled speaking to George while he was extremely sick in the clinic – Scroll down to watch it.

But the drummer’s visit was fleeting, as his daughter was also very ill at the time.

Lee Starkey was suffering a brain tumour so Ringo didn’t have​ long to see his friend before jetting off to visit his child.

Ringo said in an interview years later: “The last weeks of George’s life, he was in Switzerland, and I went to see him, and he was very ill, you know, he could only lay down.

“And while he was being ill and I’d come to see him, I was going to Boston, because my daughter had a brain tumour.”

Ringo broke the news to George: “Well, you know, I’ve got to go, I’ve got to go to Boston.” But, forever in support of his friends, George didn’t want Ringo to go through his suffering alone. Ringo continued: “And he goes – it’s the last words I heard him say, actually – and ​he said: ‘Do you want me to come with you?'” After Ringo finished his story he wiped away a tear before saying: “So, you know, that’s the incredible side of George.”

Paul went on: “It was good. It was like we were dreaming. He was my little baby brother, almost, because I’d known him that long.

“We held hands. It’s funny, even at the height of our friendship – as guys – you would never hold hands. It just wasn’t a Liverpool thing. But it was lovely.”

In November of 2001, George died. He lost his battle against cancer in the company of his wife, Olivia, his son Dhani and his longtime friend Ravi Shankar.

The Harrison family released a statement after his death. It read: “He left this world as he lived in it, conscious of God, fearless of death, and at peace, surrounded by family and friends.”

The Harrison family added: “He often said: ‘Everything else can wait but the search for God cannot wait,’ and ‘love one another.'”

The following year George’s final album, Brainwashed, was released posthumously.

His son, Dhani, and Jeff Lynne finished it off without him.

A quote from the Hindu scriptures, Bhagavad Gita, are included in the album’s liner notes. They read: “There never was a time when you or I did not exist. Nor will there be any future when we shall cease to be.”
