Gatwick has been hit with travel chaos after a major power outage hit train lines to the airport. The station to the airport is closed and holidaymakers have been warned journeys are heavily impacted. Gatwick notified passengers of the power outage earlier this afternoon, just before 1pm and advised passengers to check with train operators.
Posting on Twitter, Southern Rail said: “Due to a power cut at the station at Gatwick Airport all lines are closed.”
The post continued: “Services running through this station will be cancelled or suspended. We have been informed that Gatwick Airport station has had a total power failure. No trains can call there for the time being.”
Southern Rail added tickets will be accepted “at no extra cost” on Metrobus and TfL buses and they are advised to check service updates on the rail website.
Those heading to the airport by train are being advised to leave home at least an extra 60 minutes earlier and local Metrobus services are taking people to Gatwick from both Three Bridges and Horley stations.
Meanwhile Gatwick Express has tweeted “some services are now able to call at Gatwick”. However, these are expected to be “very busy” so it may be more convenient to continue using local buses and still allow extra time to complete your journey.
