Future State: Gotham Sets The Next Batman & Red Hood Against Each Other

The world of Future State: Gotham has affected the allies of Batman, placing two of them at odds with one another and even coming to blows.

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Future State: Gotham #3 by Joshua Williamson, Dennis Culver, Giannis, Liogiannis, ALW’s Troy Peteri, on sale now.

In the near future, Gotham City suffered a massive bombing that seemed to implicate it’s new Batman. Red Hood, now operating as Peacekeeper Red, was assigned by the Magistrate to hunt him down. The hope was that the skills acquired hunting the original Batman would be the key to stopping the new one. His hunt for the Dark Knight finally brought him face to face with Jace Fox. The two initially came to blows, Jason believing that Jace was responsible for the attack, until a massive prison break forced the two to work together to survive. In the process, the true culprit of the bombing was revealed.

Although Jason knew he had to find the new Batman, he genuinely had no idea where to start, considering the new caped crusader was not closely tied to the Bat-Family. But a tip from an incognito Bruce Wayne brought Red Hood to Blackgate Penitentiary, where he intended to interrogate Astrid Arkham, the Arkham Knight. But before he could start, he noticed and then attacked the new Batman, who was there for the same reason.

They traded blows with Jason trying to arrest Batman. But before things could escalate any further, the two were halted by the noise of multiple cell doors opening. They were soon surrounded by the inmates of Blackgate, forcing them to team up to survive. As they fought off Gotham’s many criminals, the two came to an agreement, with Batman agreeing to tell Red Hood everything he knew about the bombing after they survived this. But before the two got any farther, the ground beneath them fell apart.

They ended up in a tunnel dug up by the true perpetrator of the bombings: Warmonger. Red Hood was disoriented from the fall, but Batman attacked Warmonger, accusing him of being responsible for the bombing and framing him in the process. Warmonger not only admitted his guilt, but promised that the death he had unleashed was merely the first move in an increasingly destructive plan. He then knocked out the two heroes.

Batman and Peacekeeper Red woke up inside a small pit, having been trapped by Warmonger with no way out. But now that they knew who was responsible for the attack on Gotham, the two had no reason to fight each other. However, while they were out, Warmonger injected them with a drug that caused an uncontrollable bloodlust in the two, forcing them to attack each other.

But this is still a turning point for the two and massive development in the next Batman’s pool of allies in Gotham. Before, Red Hood was operating under the assumption that Jace was responsible for the bombing. Now he not only has a confession from someone clearly a danger to Gotham’s citizens, but also a potential ally in the man who was framed. There is now the strong possibility that this may result in a genuine partnership and the birth of a new dynamic duo.
