From a rugged Watch to VR headset: Here’s what Apple could launch in 2022

TL;DR

  • According to a new report, Apple is planning to refresh several device lines in 2022.
  • The company may introduce three Apple Watches, a big redesign to the MacBook Air, and an AR/VR headset, among others.
  • A 5G iPhone SE is also expected to debut in the year’s first half.

While most companies slowed amid the global chipset shortage and ongoing pandemic, Apple had a pretty good 2021. It continued to see growth in the smartphone sector while hitting the right spot with the new MacBook Pro. But what can we expect in 2022? According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman in his newsletter, the company could bring sweeping revamps to its core products.

Let’s start with the iPhone 14. The following model is expected to introduce a “hole-punch-sized notch” when it debuts in Q3 2022. A 5G-toting iPhone SE is reportedly in the works for the first half of 2022, while an iPad Pro with wireless charging is also expected this year.

Apple Watch fans can expect three models instead of two. A new “rugged version aimed at extreme-sports enthusiasts” could debut alongside a new SE model and the Apple Watch Series 8. Considering the Series 7 was a mild upgrade, we expect Apple to bring more advancements to the upcoming model.

A significant MacBook Air redesign — the “biggest” in its history — is expected to debut this year. Gurman notes that the chipset options are still undecided, considering the M2 might not launch any time soon. However, this year, a smaller Mac Pro, a Mac mini, and an iMac Pro with a larger screen are all expected to pack M1 Pro and M1 Max chipsets. The company is expected to ditch Intel entirely by WWDC 2022.

Finally, the most notable Apple addition could be a virtual/augmented reality headset. The product, codenamed N301, is now believed to debut in June and could land with Apple’s new rOS.
