Former hunting lodge and politician’s country home goes on sale for £1.1million

Tucked away in the village of Avon Dassett, in Southam, Warwickshire, sits the grand estate of Avon Carrow.

Once upon a time it served as a hunting lodge, then, from 1925 to the late 60s, it was the country home of politician John Profumo.

Does that name sound familiar? There’s a reason – Profumo was the centre of a major political scandal back in the day, when his career ended after the exposure of a sexual relationship with a then 19-year-old model.

That’s quite a dark history, we know, but that doesn’t diminish the loveliness of the property, which is now on the market for offers above £1,100,000.

Since the Profumo affair, the country house went through another transformation, converted in 1983 to a number of mews homes.

It’s the Tower at Avon Carrow that’s up for sale, which is the central point to the building.

Location-wise, the country is set in a conservation area with many other period stone houses and cottages.

Nearby are the Dasset Hills, and local amenities include a pub and a church.
