Tucked away in the village of Avon Dassett, in Southam, Warwickshire, sits the grand estate of Avon Carrow.
Once upon a time it served as a hunting lodge, then, from 1925 to the late 60s, it was the country home of politician John Profumo.
Does that name sound familiar? There’s a reason – Profumo was the centre of a major political scandal back in the day, when his career ended after the exposure of a sexual relationship with a then 19-year-old model.
That’s quite a dark history, we know, but that doesn’t diminish the loveliness of the property, which is now on the market for offers above £1,100,000.
Since the Profumo affair, the country house went through another transformation, converted in 1983 to a number of mews homes.
It’s the Tower at Avon Carrow that’s up for sale, which is the central point to the building.
While the property has been updated to make it a great living space, it still retains many of its original period features.
It’s also pretty massive, so would make an ideal home for anyone who dreams of their very own country estate.
Let’s start with the exterior, made up of very impressive Hornton ironstone with a stone slate roof, detailed carved stonework, moulded gable parapets, and mullion windows.
Outside, there are communal gardens of about seven acres, along with a tennis court and a garage.
Interiors wise, there’s around 2,907 sq ft of space, spread over three floors and a roof terrace.
On the ground floor you’ll find the entrance hall on the other side of a grand oak doorway, with oak panelled walls, exposed timbers, a stone spiral staircase, and the original stained glass windows.
Up one level and there’s the kitchen, dining gallery, and a balcony, which was previously used for the selection of horses passing through the arch below, but now serves as a wine store.
On the second floor is the main bedroom, which offers incredible views over the rolling Warwickshire countryside, and a guest bedroom with more stained glass windows.
On the third floor are two more bedrooms, then up again is that roof terrace we mentioned.
Location-wise, the country is set in a conservation area with many other period stone houses and cottages.
Nearby are the Dasset Hills, and local amenities include a pub and a church.
The listing has been described as a rare opportunity to buy up a home with rich ‘historical, cultural and architectural significance’.
Savills property agent Nick Rudge said: ‘It’s so lovely to feel part of this historical masterpiece.’
If you’re keen to put in an offer or just stare at the listing and dream of having £1.1million spare, you can do both through the Savills website.
