A perfect manicure is something that adds more elegance to a flawless look. There are many who treat themselves to a professional mani-pedi at a salon. But sometimes weak and brittle nails can make it difficult for one to maintain them. According to a report by Indian Express, Dr. Shraddha Deshpande, a reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, revealed that a lack of zinc, iron, calcium, magnesium, vitamins, and other micronutrients can result in nail deformities. Along with brittle nails, there’s also a high chance of discolouration that can make them sometimes make them appear not pleasing to the eyes.

What needs to be done for maintaining healthy nails?

As per Dr. Deshpande, it is crucial to consume foods that provide the body with ample micronutrients. Whole grains, fruits including strawberries, guava, green leafy vegetables, protein sources including eggs and lean meats, nuts like almonds, and sunflower seeds are deemed efficient to improve healthy nails.

In addition to this, there are a few common mistakes that need to be avoided when it comes to taking care of your nails. A cosmetic dermatologist, Dr. Jaishree Sharad, took to social media to she light on the five errors that can harm one’s nail health.

Five nail mistakes to avoid

  1. Do not bite fingernails: Bitting fingernail is an urge that sometimes happens involuntarily which is considered unhygienic. According to the expert, it can lead up to infections and give rise to several conditions including ingrown nails and hanging nails.
  2. Do not dig into your cuticles: If you’re into watching viral nail-care and manicure videos, you must have come across many clips that showcase the process of cutting cuticles to ensure a clean nail bed. However, if you’re about to follow the process in your nail routine, it is pertinent to know that cuticles protect nails from germs and infections, hence the process puts one at more risk of bacterial and fungal infections.
  3. Hangnails: Bad nail health sometimes results into hang nails, a condition caused due to the dryness of the skin. But one must not peel off hangnails instead to avoid the situation, one must keep the nails cuticles moisturized.
  4. Do not use nails as tools: Nails shouldn’t be used as tools as they can lead it to break, thereby provincial having healthy growth again.
  5. Do not use soaps and detergents frequently: Not many know but soaps and detergents can cause thinning of nails, hence one shouldn’t use them frequently or at least use gloves to protect themselves from harmful reactions.
