What’s Final Fantasy VII Remake Traces of Two Pasts?

Square Enix released in Japan on July 15, 2021, Final Fantasy VII Remake Traces of Two Pasts, a novel with two global parts, focusing on the childhood and lives of Tifa and Aerith respectively.

The novel recently received an Amazon Kindle version, so it’s easier to buy now, without having to deal with international shipping. Several fans have already launched multiple fan-translation projects too. It’s likely Square Enix will officially localize the novel at some point, but it wasn’t announced outside Japan yet.

Now, several weeks after the novel’s release, a new interview was published on the Japanese Final Fantasy portal site. Where scenarist Kazushige Nojima shared numerous details on his creative process for the novel. In the second half of the interview, Nojima most notably teased he might write novels for Yuffie Kisaragi and Vincent Valentine later on.

Do you have any plans for future novels in mind?

Kazushige Nojima: “Writing these novels is incredibly difficult, and all the pain I’ve felt till reaching the final manuscript is still fresh in my mind. I’ll start thinking about future novels once I start forgetting that pain (laughs).”

I think you could write something for the other characters left, like a Yuffie novel on her childhood

Kazushige Nojima: “I guess yeah… Besides Yuffie, all the characters left are old dudes… Maybe a Vincent novel might be interesting too.”

That’s all for the interview. Be sure to check out the rest if you speak Japanese as it’s pretty interesting overall, though there’s nothing else major. Be sure to check out the latest development update from Tetsuya Nomura too. Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 is still in the works and has no official name yet.

In related news, Final Fantasy XVI is also in development at Square Enix on PS5. We translated the latest development update from producer Naoki Yoshida here. Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis and The First Solider are also still in development on mobile. The First Soldier already had a Beta Test and is scheduled to launch before 2021 ends. We might learn more about all upcoming Final Fantasy games at Tokyo Game Show 2021 in September.

You can also follow Kazushige Nojima on Twitter and send him some messages of support. And make some farfetched FF7R Part 2 theories based on all the hamster photos he shares. Personally, Yuffie and Vincent are my favorite FF7 characters, so it’d be awesome if these novels truly happened.
