Fashion expert claims to spot ‘most controversial’ royal style moment

The Royal Family – particularly the royal women – have enviable wardrobes brimming with lavish, couture pieces most people could only dream of.

And due to their status and various protocols they might be encouraged to follow, the royals rarely miss when it comes to what they wear.

However, according to personal stylist Melissa Lund, the fashionable family have had some controversial looks over the years.

She said: “Members of the Royal Family haven’t always got it right over the years.

“Sometimes this comes down to an unusual or daring choice and sometimes it’s because the outfit chosen didn’t suit the wearer.”

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have very chic, signature styles but one thing Melissa can’t get behind was their hats for Kate and William’s wedding in 2011, which also received some backlash at the time.

Eugenie’s choice was a blue hat with purple flowers and beige feathers, and Beatrice’s was more of a sculptural piece in cream.

According to the expert, the hats were great but perhaps not totally fitting for the women wearing them.

She said: “In my opinion by far the most controversial fashion choice was the Philip Treacy hats worn by Eugenie and Beatrice.

“I like Philip Treacy as a milliner and I think these hats would have looked great if used for a fashion shoot.

“I could have imagined the late, great Isabella Blow wearing them but the designer’s vision didn’t translate into real life on two fairly young girls who weren’t fashion-savvy enough to pull the look off.”

Another controversial style moment, according to the expert, was Princess Anne’s trouser suit back in 1979.

However, according to Melissa, this was more because it was a “daring” choice as opposed to “not suiting the wearer”.

She said: “Hard to imagine now but back then a Royal Princess wearing trousers was seen as very daring indeed.”
