Extreme Carnage Shows What Separates Marvel’s Newest Symbiote from the Hive

Marvel’s newest symbiote just discovered the biggest difference between her and the rest of the Hive, and it could be the key to defeating Carnage.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Extreme Carnage: Riot, available now from Marvel.

The most recent return of Carnage has seen the serial killer symbiote decide to fly under the radar for a change. Rather than make a grand entrance from the start, Carnage has instead taken up a more clandestine approach to sewing death and destruction. So far this has proven to be plenty effective when it comes to increasing his own following, especially as long as he has access to the symbiote Hive. Of course, being connected to every other symbiote also makes it easy enough for the most heroic of them to track their bloodthirsty brethren.

At least, it would be if not for the fact that the newest symbiote is shockingly disconnected from the Hive entirely, and that’s something that Andi Benton and Silence has no idea how to handle in Extreme Carnage: Riot #1, by Alyssa Wong, Fran Galan, Jim Campbell and VC’s Ariana Maher.

Andi Benton only barely survived the wounds inflicted upon her by Phage thanks to a brand new symbiote made from the remnants of Scream and a portion of Anti-Venom. Known as Silence, this new symbiote proves herself to be far more powerful than her Life Foundation brethren could ever hope to be. Once the dust has settled, Andi even has a chance to show Flash Thompson that she really is okay before they make a hasty exit. Before long, the two are discussing what their next move will be, though Flash already has something in mind. Silence isn’t just a stronger symbiote than Phage, her touch completely cut him off from the Hive, and doing the same to Carnage would free all of those under his influence. Andi is understandably hesitant to face Carnage on her own, but Flash’s reassurance is all the convincing that she needs. Unfortunately, when Silence reaches out to the Hive, that’s all she finds.

Instead of the Hive, Silence discovers a never-ending void, and from the looks of things, she is its only current inhabitant. She can’t even feel her fellow Life Foundation symbiotes, though she can vividly remember the feeling of their presence. As she describes her experience, it is as if their connection to one another has been corrupted somehow. It would seem easy enough to blame Carnage for this, but that might not be the case at all. Silence being able to strip other symbiotes of their connection to the Hive makes it easy to assume she herself was already disconnected from it, likely due to the Anti-Venom symbiotes effects when bonded to what little was left of Scream after Andi burned herself free from it. Whatever the case may be, this makes tracking the other symbiotes down virtually impossible for Silence.

Silence doesn’t need to be the one to find Carnage in the flesh in order to bring his reign of terror to an abrupt end. Flash Thompson has already shown himself more than capable of doing just that without much effort. If all that Andi needs to do to cull Carnage’s influence from the Hive is lay a hand on him, then she can easily rely on Anti-Venom to point her in the right direction. Better yet, Carnage wouldn’t even see her coming, as her presence is just as hidden from the Hive as it is from her. With any luck, this most recent development will be just what the heroes need to put an end to Carnage once and for all.
