‘Exotic’ English destination that looks like the ‘tropical’ Maldives

A travel guide from Enjoytravel reviewed the most scenic UK places that feel like they are abroad and revealed the destination in England where “you could be half-heartedly convinced you are in the exotic Maldives”.

The Isles of Scilly, in Cornwall, was named the most exotic place in England, and some of its beaches are almost identical to the Maldives.

The travel gurus explained: “The Scilly archipelago could make you believe you are in the Maldives or the Caribbean Sea.”

The five inhabited islands are “resplendent with wildlife, unspoiled beaches and sites from the Iron and Bronze Ages”.

They added: “What makes them feel most special, though, is their distinctly tropical vegetation and climate. The Isles of Scilly are some of the only places in the UK that experience warm winters.”

The Isles of Scilly is an unspoiled archipelago off the English coast, with white sandy beaches and lots of palm trees.

On the official Visit Isles of Scilly website the archipelago is described as “a natural wonder, like a cluster of precious ocean jewels, where nature thrives and the soul is inspired”.

“With the space and freedom to do everything or nothing, our enchanting archipelago guarantees a magical, unforgettable experience,” it said.

How to get to the Isles of Scilly

Travellers can fly directly to the Isles of Scilly from Penzance, Land’s End Airport, Cornwall Newquay Airport or Exeter International Airport.

Alternatively, they can drive to Penzance, in Cornwall, and from there take a ferry to the islands. Once there, holidaymakers can rent a car or cycle to visit the island, although “taking your vehicle there when you go on holiday is not permitted”.

The official website explained: “There are very few cars on St Mary’s (the largest island) and they belong to the residents. The other inhabited islands have virtually no vehicles other than a few farm vehicles/pickup trucks.”

Some people who recently visited the island explained that “you won’t need a car” as St Mary’s has a minibus that will take you from the airport to the doorstep of your chosen accommodation.

They explained: “There are a few taxis and a bus that does a circular route around the ‘main’ road on the island. Other than that visitors hire bicycles or small electric golf carts, or walk.”

Best beaches on the Isles of Scilly

According to The Beach Guide, the best beaches in Isles Of Scilly are Pentle Bay, Green Bay, Appletree Bay, Great Bay and Pelistry Bay.

Pentle Bay has “everything you would expect from a Scilly island beach, white sand, clear blue sea and barely another soul to be seen”.

Appletree Bay has sub-tropical gardens and is “another gem of the Scilly Isles with everything you would expect from these pristine beaches”.
