Excited Anne Hathaway urges us all to be patient over new Princess Diaries film

Anne Hathaway is delighted by the fan response following the news that there’s more Princess Diaries on the way but has urged us all to sit tight.

More than 21 years after we were first introduced to the actress’s iconic character Mia Thermopolis, Disney confirmed in November that we would be once again returning to Genovia for another helping of Royal fun.

While the new film has been many years in the waiting, Hathaway, who isn’t officially confirmed to be making a comeback, said that the process of making it ‘requires patience’.

‘We feel the exact same, and I know it’s probably very frustrating,’ she said.

Hathaway continued to People: ‘It’s a process that requires patience, and so everybody should consider themselves a part of the movie business now, because this is how long it actually takes to make things.’

Hathaway’s comments come just one month after her Princess Diaries co-star Dame Julie Andrews, who starred as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, ruled herself out of returning.

‘I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,’ the 87-year-old said when asked about her involvement.

‘It was talked about very shortly after [the sequel] came out, but it’s now how many years since then?

‘I’m that much older and Annie, the princess – or queen – is so much older and I’m not sure whether it would float or run.’

When the idea of a reboot was suggested, she agreed to Access Hollywood: ‘Well maybe, yes. But in terms of us doing it, I very much doubt that now.

‘Something, we’ll do together, I hope. She’s a great friend.’

The original Princess Diaries film, based on Meg Cabot’s popular book series, was released in 2001 and follows Mia finding out that her dad’s side of the family is royalty in Genovia, and that she is technically a princess.

She transforms from a gawky teenager to a European royal, with the 2004 sequel showing the moment she takes the throne herself.
