Last year’s Ukrainian Eurovision winners have funded the rescue of orphaned cats and dogs in their war-torn country, it was revealed yesterday.
Kalush Orchestra have secretly saved hundreds of animals left abandoned, even taking some in themselves.
The group, fronted by Oleh Psiuk, Ihor Didenchuk and MC KylymMen, swept to victory at last year’s Eurovision ahead of British entry Sam Ryder.
A band spokesman said: “Unfortunately, animals cannot save themselves. Many of them became homeless due to the death of their owners, who were killed by the Russian military.

“We believe that with joint efforts we will be able to support not only our heroes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and people participating in reconstruction works and medical projects but also homeless animals.”
As part of their drive to save animals, Kalush Orchestra have organised a massive fundraiser. All funds will go to the Sumy Animal Protection Society, to be spent on animals’ treatment, transportation from the war zone, processing of documents, vaccination and chips.
Sales of the band’s merchandise are also going towards the cause.
The group’s members have also cared for several animals personally.
The spokesman added: “KylymMen rescued a homeless cat and took it from the street. This cat turned out to be pregnant and gave birth to three kittens a month ago. KylymMen is taking care of them now.” As the Eurovision champions, Kalush Orchestra are planning a UK visit this weekend as Liverpool hosts the contest on behalf of Ukraine due to the Russian invasion.
They will perform during the grand final on Saturday.
The band said they were “grateful” to the UK for hosting the event. Mae Muller, 25, will compete for the UK with her track I Wrote A Song.
