It was a night for celebration for Liverpool after Graham Norton announced the city would host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023.

But there was one supporter in particular that music fans were particularly thrilled to see among the crowds in the Northern city as the news broke.

Eagle-eyed social media users spotted that singer Sonia was cheering away in the throngs of people in footage aired on Friday’s episode of The One Show.

Sonia, from Skelmersdale, represented the UK in the 1993 edition of the Eurovision, where she finished in second place with the song Better the Devil You Know.

The 51-year-old told The One Show presenters Roman Kemp and Alex Jones: ‘Scousers know how to party!’, with Graham later confessing to viewers he was ‘surprised Sonia didn’t explode.’

Eurovision fans were equally delighted to see the popstar on their screens, with one writing on Twitter: ‘Petition for Sonia to do a halftime show like it’s the Super Bowl #Eurovision2023 #Liverpool.’

A viewer asked excitedly: ‘Anyone else loving seeing Sonia helping announce Liverpool are hosting #Eurovision2023? Scouse royalty!’

A Sonia fan added: ‘Well this is going to be a little bit special. Where are you Sonia? We need you! #Eurovision2023.’

In Liverpool, the contest will be located on the city’s waterfront, the site of the M&S Bank Arena and ACC Liverpool conference centre, which hosted the Labour party conference last month.

As well as the contest itself, a full cultural programme will be put on to welcome Eurovision to Merseyside, including street art, fashion and community education are all set to be involved in the celebrations.

Mayor of Liverpool Joanne Anderson said: ‘This is a massive event and the eyes of the world will be on us in May, especially those of our friends in Ukraine.

‘Now begins months of work to put on the best party ever. Ukraine, you have my promise we will do you proud.’

During the late 80s and early 90s, Sonia had 11 top 30 hits in the UK, including bangers Listen to Your Heart and Only Fools (Never Fall in Love).

Outside of music, the 51-year-old has appeared on the West End as Sandy in Grease and in television programmes including The Lily Savage Show and Celebrity 5 Go Caravanning.

The Eurovision Song Contest comes to the BBC on Saturday May, 13.
