Emma Raducanu storms into US Open fourth round to set up potential Ashleigh Barty clash

Emma Raducanu has booked a potential US Open fourth-round clash with world No 1 Ashleigh Barty after destroying Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets. British sensation Raducanu burst onto the scene by reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon this summer after being handed a wildcard.

The 18-year-old has matched her only ever previous Grand Slam appearance by making the second week in New York.

Raducanu shot out of the blocks and put Sorribes Tormo to the sword from the off.

World No 41 Sorribes Tormo was unable to deal with the Brit’s powerful and precise shots, which were consistently delivered on her side of the court.

After breaking in the second game, Raducanu wasted no time in rushing through the remainder of the first set.

Sorribes Tormo tried to fight back in the second set and got on the board when serving to stay in the match in the sixth game.

Raducanu almost broke for the match but Sorribes Tormo held her serve for the first time after the fifth deuce.

Raducanu served out the victory in the following game and will meet Barty or Shelby Rogers in the fourth round.

With the win, Raducanu guarantees herself a take-home prize fund of £191,000 ($260,000).

“I was playing very well and I know Sara is a very tough opponent, she doesn’t make a mistake so you have to be on your game,” Raducanu said.

“I had to work so hard and there were some really long deuce games which could have gone either way.

“I am really happy that I was able to maintain and stay on it.”
