Twitter owner Elon Musk announced on Saturday that the social media platform will temporarily limit the number of tweets that users can read per day.
Verified accounts will be limited to 6,000 tweets per day, while unverified accounts and new unverified accounts will be limited to 600 tweets per day and 300 tweets per day, respectively.
Musk said that the move was necessary to address “extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation.” He added that hundreds of organizations were scraping Twitter data “extremely aggressively,” which was degrading service for normal users.
To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits:
– Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts/day
– Unverified accounts to 600 posts/day
– New unverified accounts to 300/day— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 1, 2023
On Friday, Twitter also announced that it will now require users to have an account on the platform to view tweets. This move, which Musk called a “temporary emergency measure,” is also aimed at preventing data scraping.
Musk has previously expressed displeasure at artificial intelligence firms using Twitter’s data to train their large language models. He has said that he believes that Twitter’s data should be used for the benefit of its users, not for the benefit of third-party companies.
The temporary limits on data scraping and account creation have been met with mixed reactions from Twitter users. Some users have welcomed the move, saying that it will help to protect their privacy and make the platform more user-friendly. Others have criticized the move, saying that it is an infringement on their freedom of speech.
