DWP update: Universal Credit claimants may receive payment early this week

The DWP oversees a wide range of benefits, but perhaps the most widely claimed is Universal Credit. The payment offers support to those who are out of work, unable to work and individuals on a low income. Universal Credit claimants usually receive their payment once a month, and understanding when this will drop into bank accounts is important.

This is because many people will budget around their Universal Credit payment to help.

However, it is worth noting that payments are impacted by bank holidays throughout the year.

Recently, over Christmas, people saw their payment dates change, and the same is also true for those expecting to receive payments in the New Year.

What people should be aware of is that New Year’s Day once again falls on a weekend like Christmas did.

New Year’s Day is on Saturday, January 1, 2022 in this coming year.

However, due to the fact this is a weekend, the bank holiday will be moved to Monday January, 3.

Those who could be affected, therefore, are individuals who are expecting payments on January 1, 2 or 3.

These people will receive their Universal Credit slightly earlier to ensure they have the sum over this period.

Therefore, they can expect to get their payment on Friday, December 31 – New Year’s Eve.

This date is the last working day before the new year, and therefore is when the DWP will be dealing with payments.

If people are interested in claiming Universal Credit for the first time, the process is intended to be as easy to navigate as possible.

People will be able to apply online, but must apply as a couple if they have a partner and the pair live together – even if they are not married.

To apply, people will need their bank, building society or credit union account details, as well as an email address.

They will also need to provide details about their circumstances such as income, savings, childcare payments and investments.

Britons also have to verify their identity online using their driving licence, passport, or credit or debit card.

The Universal Credit team may phone a person after they have sent their application if they require further information.
