Duke of Edinburgh – A First Time Campers Experience, by Chloe MacLean, Notre Dame
There are four required activities to obtain The Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award: skill, sport, volunteering, and the expedition. Out of the skill, sport and volunteering the participant would choose one to complete over the course of six months and the others at a minimum of three. Chrissy chose playing the cello as her skill, an instrument which she has been learning since she was in primary school. There was no questioning what Chrissy would do as her sport, basketball, a sport in which s has been on multiple teams in more than one country and has even reached state level. Chrissy has also done online volunteering for Zooniverse, counting different types of galaxies specifically jellyfish galaxies which have a unique spiral shape.
Chrissy had her practice expedition from the 25th to the 26th of March in the Surrey Downs where she camped overnight and then walked for 16.83 kilometres to the meeting spot. She said that “it was very fun, and I enjoyed spending time with my friends”. Chrissy also said that her favourite part was “seeing all the scenery and pretty trees” which she took many photos of with her camera. However, the weather was not of their side as it rained on off for the duration of the expedition which created a lot of mud.
Chrissy said that for the real expedition she would bring more layers and handwarmers as she did not expect the temperatures to drop so significantly in the evening. She would also bring more food and snacks as her team underestimated how much they would eat as they used a huge amount of their energy walking. Moreover, Chrissy emphasised that the whole experience so far “has been very rewarding” and she has learnt many new skills such as persistence as well as working on her organisational and teamwork skills.
The final expedition is in late May, and we will be cheering Chrissy on and wishing her good weather and little less mud.
