Dreams support is ending but Media Molecule is working on new game

Dreams – bad news to wake up to (pic: Sony)

PS4 game creation tool Dreams is ending live support this September, but the creators of LittleBigPlanet are working on something new.

It’s very hard to believe that Sony ever had any faith in Dreams, the video game construction kit that allows you to create your own games and virtual experiences with a minimum of technical known-how.

It worked very well but Sony never marketed it, never released a dedicated PlayStation 5 version, and, most bafflingly, never allowed people that don’t own the game to play people’s creations as their own separate downloads – so that they might see how good they are.

That means most people aren’t even aware Dreams exists and so it’s no surprise to find out that developer Media Molecule is winding down support, although it will continue to be available for purchase after September.

Dreams will migrate to a new server next month, with a new cloud storage limit of 5GB for anything players make. Although that will be on top of any current creations they might have stored.

Live support will end on September 1, meaning no more updates or patches and no more promotions, like the various community award events that Media Molecule has previously organised.

‘Dreams has been a special project for Media Molecule and helping this burgeoning community of game developers, tinkerers, creatives, collaborators and dreamers grow and express themselves remains one of the best things we’ve ever done,’ reads the official blog announcement.

‘Thank you for being part of it with us – we look forward to you joining us on our next adventure.’

The only clue as to what that next adventure might be is that it’s not Dreams 2 or anything related to the Dreams IP.

That does leave open the possibility that it could be a revival of the LittleBigPlanet brand, whose only recent entry was spin-off Sackboy: A Big Adventure – an action game with no design element, developed by Sumo Digital.

Sackboy was at one time used as a quasi-mascot by Sony, but he’s been less visible in recent years and it’s difficult to gauge how much interest there is in bringing him back.
