Dr. Sumita Shankar Advocates Timely Surgical Intervention and Burn Care Protocols at NABI National Academy of Burns Meet – Times of India

GUNTUR: Stating that timely surgical intervention is very crucial to save the lives, a renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Sumita Shankar has suggested setting up of an exclusive burns division with complete skin bank for the facility of the burns patients. Addressing the gathering at National Academy of Burns meet held at AIIMS Mangalagiri, Dr Sumita emphasized the significance of adhering to well-established protocols when dealing with severe burns. She underscored the imperative of a dedicated team effort in the treatment of such cases. Dr Sumita brought attention to the growing incidence of electrical burn injuries in the state, which has led to a surge in the patients requiring major amputations. “These individuals undergo the harrowing ordeal of repeated reconstructive surgeries. Consequently, those facing amputations or functional disabilities face the challenge of being unable to work, relying on government disability pensions for support, creating a burden on the state’s resources,” noted Dr Sumita.

In a further acknowledgement of her expertise, Dr. Sumita Shankar was nominated to participate in an Advanced Burn Training workshop at AIIMS Delhi. She lauded the efforts of both Central and State governments in their endeavors to establish comprehensive burn care facilities throughout the nation. Dr.Shankar proposed the establishment of a dedicated burn unit in Andhra Pradesh, complete with a skin bank. “This facility would not only cater to burn victims but also prove beneficial for trauma patients with extensive raw areas resulting from degloving injuries,” said Dr Shankar. She expressed her willingness to conduct courses on burn care and wound care nursing through Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences (YSR UHS) to address the overwhelming demand for skilled professionals in the field
