Jodie Whittaker will bow out as the Time Lord in Doctor Who later this year.

And according to the show’s director, the upcoming regeneration will be like nothing we’ve seen before.

Jamie Magnus Stone said the show’s production team have made a crucial change to the style of regeneration we’d normally see, which could have significant effects.

And apparently, this may be a regeneration like no other – because according to the episode’s director Jamie Magnus Stone, the production team have made a crucial change to the usual style of regeneration that could have some significant effects.

He told Radio Times: ‘I’m very fortunate in that I’m directing the last one of them. So I’m actually doing her regeneration.

‘Basically, her last day of filming was most of the crew’s last day of filming as well. So it was all orchestrated to have this big, final last day. And we shot that last day for Jodie in story order. So we ended up on her last scene. But before that, there were so many tears.’

And the new twist?

Well, Jodie’s Doctor will not undergo her big change in the TARDIS.

The famous time machine was used for one of her later scenes in the final episode, but before the crucial regeneration which was shot elsewhere.

‘Everybody clapped her – and Mandip, actually. Everybody clapped them into the TARDIS for their last time, and then there were some tears,’ Jamie recalled.

‘And we shot the last-ever scene in the TARDIS, and said goodbye to the TARDIS, and then there were some tears.’

He said they then ‘went out to film, basically, her regeneration.’

‘The last shot that we did, I think, will be the last shot in the episode as well. So it was really nice to do things in sequence. And it was mostly Jodie and Mandip’s scenes on that last day. So it was just super-emotional,’ the director shared.

While it may not seem like a super drastic change, it’s certainly not traditional for the Doctor to regenerate outside of the TARDIS.

It has been done already by Tom Baker’s Doctor, who transformed into Peter Davison’s in an outdoor setting, and when Sylvester McCoy handed over the baton to Paul McGann in a San Francisco morgue.

However, both of these past experiences were traumatic ordeals for the new Time Lords, and they needed time to recover.

A regeneration beyond the walls of the TARDIS has never taken place post-2005, so it’ll be interesting to see where this one occurs!

It has often been easier for the regeneration to take place inside the time machine, especially to keep the identity of the new Doctor under wraps.

Speculation has been rife about who will take over from Jodie on the BBC show – which was recently voted the best show ever made by the network – but we’ll have to wait a little closer to her autumn exit to find out.

 Lydia West

Show-runner Russell T Davies is also yet to return to filming, so he could have big plans for how to introduce viewers to Jodie’s replcement.

Most recently, much-loved Doctor David Tennant – who portrayed the 10th Doctor – was thought to be returning, however, his odds have since been slashed.

It’s A Sin star Lydia West is currently top of the list, with Olly Alexander following behind, despite his constant denials.

Omari Douglas, Fisayo Akinade, and Rakhee Thakrar come next, with David following on afterwards.

Line of Duty actress Vicky McClure has also ruled herself out of playing the next Doctor.

We seriously can’t wait to find out who it’ll be, and how the regeneration happens!
