Doctor Doom and a Sorcerer Supreme Destroyed Earth Without Trying

Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #1 reveals that Doctor Doom and the Spirit of Vengeance once accidentally destroyed the Earth in a fight.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #1, available now on Marvel Unlimited.

In the wake of the death of Doctor Strange, the Marvel Universe is scrambling to find its new sorcerer supreme. But it is worth noting that Strange was far from being the first magician to hold the prestigious title. Hundreds of years before Strange’s reign – Kushala, the Spirit of Vengeance, held the position as the Earth’s mightiest sorcerer. In fact, she was so powerful that she accidentally destroyed the entire planet in a confrontation with Doctor Doom.

Taboo, B. Earl, Guillermo Sanna, Jordie Bellaire and VC’s Joe Sabino’s Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #1 begins with Doctor Doom and Kushala hurdling through space chasing after each other in the midst of what appears to be a battle of epic proportions. The events are narrated by Olivia Oberta, Kushala’s great-great-great-great granddaughter who doesn’t go into great detail about the events that lead up to this cosmic confrontation, but the ending she describes is terrifying.

After chasing, Kushala throughout space for an indeterminate amount of time, Doctor Doom finally catches up with the spirit of vengeance. She exclaims that “This is the end” and that she won’t allow him to “close the circle.” Then Kushala attacks Doom with such force that debris from the resulting explosion plummets down to Earth. The shockwaves of her immense magical power appear to bring about the end of the world.

It may come as some surprise to hear that Kushala is powerful enough to destroy the world at all, nonetheless by complete accident. But, it is important to remember that Kushala is one of the strongest heroes in the Marvel Universe. Since her first appearance in 2016’s Doctor Strange and the Sorcerer’s Supreme  #1 by Robbie Thompson, Javier Rodriguez, Alvaro Lopez and Jordie Bellaire she has proven herself to be equally well-versed in the mystic arts and hand-to-hand combat. Kushala originally lived during the 1800s, but when the members of her Apache tribe were brutally murdered, she asked the creator for revenge- and, for better or for worse, the Spirit of Vengeance answered her prayers. Since being possessed by the spirit, she has studied as many different types of magic as possible and traveled through time on numerous occasions. So in some ways, Kushala is uniquely equipped to bring about the end of the world.

Luckily, Olivia’s narration continues even after the end of the world. She goes on to discuss time travel and the ways in which major events cause “ripples” in time. She also explains that Kushala recruited her to leave the dimension she called home to travel along the “circles of time” with her ancient ancestor in an effort to stop Doctor Doom once and for all, which she says she’s done. It seems that for the time being, Kushala is powerful enough to undo the end of the world too. But at the end of Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #1, it’s revealed that Doom is spying on Olivia and has access to all of her research into her family’s past, which could mean that Kushala’s descendant — and the entire world — are in grave danger.

Doctor Doom and Kushala accidentally caused an apocalypse that would make Marvel’s Dark Ages seem downright utopian, which illustrates the extreme dangers presented by their rivalry, which seems to be centuries old. If the Spirit of Vengeance and Doom were able to destroy the planet without even trying, one shudders to think what they could do if they really put their minds to it.
