Diwata Komiks Brings Philippine Mythology to Comics With New Series

Publisher Diwata Komiks will launch with Carmina: A Filipino-American Urban Mythology, a comic that follows the daughter of a goddess.

Publishing startup Diwata Komiks is set to launch its first initiative with an exciting new lineup of urban fantasy series. The publisher hopes to foster the growth of their Komiks — that is, unique comics stemming from Philippine mythology, with Filipino creators — on a global scale.

The publisher is founded by a team of global creatives, including Emmy Award-winner Mark A.J. Nazal, producer Joe Arciaga, actor/writer/producer Erica Juliet and the award-winning Filipino comics artist Roland Amago. Their first title will be Carmina: A Filipino-American Urban Mythology, which follows a young biracial woman living an unassuming life in New Mexico. She quickly discovers she is the daughter of a goddess and is part Diwata — a mythical being from indigenous Phillippine folklore and religion. More titles are currently in the works.

“I believe that just as we’ve traveled to this country, so have our stories that now have a foothold here in some of the most unexpected places,” Nazal said in a statement, ahead of Carmina‘s release.

Diwata Komiks Director of Community Engagement Joe Arciaga shared in the same statement that, “We believe there is a space for these stories today with an ever-growing population of Filipino-Americans looking to see ourselves represented in our own narratives and a new generation of international readers looking for new sources of lore.”

Carmina: A Filipino-American Urban Mythology goes on sale Oct. 30 digitally and physically.
