Did ‘The Simpsons’ predict a Bengals Super Bowl 2022 win? Not exactly
These modern day doh-racles might be getting more credit than they deserve.
As if “The Simpsons” didn’t foretell enough future events, the clairvoyant comedy cartoon is now being credited with predicting the Cincinnati Bengals will beat the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 2022. A meme depicting the Matt Groening-created show’s supposed sports forecast racked up nearly 85,000 likes with “Simpsons” fans wondering if they’d done it yet again.
“Bet the house on the Bengals,” reads the caption to the allegedly prophetic tweet, which was posted Tuesday by the account “NFL Memes.”
Attached are three photos showcasing Simpsonified Bengals cheerleaders, Homer Simpson with “Go Bengals” tattooed on his stomach and a screenshot of one of the show’s satirical sportscasts with the tagline “BENGALS win SUPER BOWL !! Cin 34 LA 31” superimposed over it.
However, as with many so-called “Simpsons” predictions, this one wasn’t exactly ironclad. For one, the third still was ripped from the 1992 episode “Lisa the Greek,” in which a machine called “Gamble-Tron 2000” predicted that the Bengals would rout the Miami Dolphins by 200 points. In a bid to get back at Homer for ignoring her, Lisa tells him to bet on Miami, who inexplicably win, resulting in her becoming a gambling guru.
Along with showcasing a nearly three-decade-old episode, the meme was also lying as in the show, the Bengals played the Dolphins and not the Rams as the haphazardly imposed text suggests. Not to mention that the Bengals ended up losing the game.
Also, the other images are from different episodes with the Homer pic hailing from 2005’s Season 16, Episode 8, “Homer and Ned’s Hail Mary Pass.”
Prediction veracity notwithstanding, “The Simpsons,” does have some surprising connections with Cincinnati’s pigskin squad.
Not only is Homer an avid Bengals fan, but “The Simpsons” debuted in 1989 — the same year that the Bengals went to a Super Bowl, USA Today reported. That was the last time they’d been in the NFL championship game.
Meanwhile, Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, spent her first two years of college attending Ohio University in Athens — the home of Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow.
In conclusion, “The Simpsons” might not be the greatest sports oracle. However, they have been credited with foretelling a smorgasbord of groundbreaking events from Richard Branson’s space flight to Senator Ted Cruz’s ill-timed Cancun, Mexico, trip and even the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
