Karan Johar, who took a break from directing for seven years, has returned with his latest film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The movie features Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles, with Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi, and Jaya Bachchan in significant parts. The film has been released in theatres this week and has garnered favourable reactions from both viewers and reviewers.
In addition to the chemistry between the lead actors Ranveer and Alia, a lip-lock scene between veteran actors Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi surprised the audience. A specific scene features the two star-crossed lovers reuniting after a long separation. Everything in the scenario comes to a complete halt when Dharmendra performs the well-known vintage song Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar and consummates their reunion with a passionate kiss.
In an interview with a leading news portal, Dharmendra said, “I am hearing that Shabana and I have surprised the audience with the kissing scene, and at the same time they have even applauded it. I think people weren’t expecting it and it came very suddenly which is why it created an impact. The last time I did a kissing scene was in Life In A Metro with Nafisa Ali and at that time too people had appreciated it.”
The veteran actor further explained that when Karan narrated the scene to them, he didn’t feel excited initially. However, both of them understood the scene’s importance for the film and realised that it wasn’t forced into the storyline. Dharmendra decided to go ahead with it. He also expressed his belief that there is no age limit for romance, emphasising that age is merely a number. According to him, two people, regardless of their age, can express their love for each other through a kiss. He mentioned that both he and Shabana didn’t feel any awkwardness while shooting the scene as it was handled very aesthetically.
Dharmendra speaks about the film, expressing his usual sentiment of feeling that he could have done better (laughs). However, he praises Karan for directing a fantastic film and enjoys working with him for the first time. Dharmendra praises all the actors, mentioning Ranveer’s terrific performance and Alia’s natural acting skills. He also praises Shabana and Jaya, whom he fondly refers to as his Guddi. The film has been released, and Dharmendra hopes that people will watch it in theatres and continue to show their love and support for the movie.
Meanwhile, on the professional front, Dharmendra will next be seen in Shriram Raghavan’s Ekkis, a biopic based on the life of a martyred soldier. The film also stars Agastya Nanda.
