Deborah James receives outpouring of support from stars after hospice care move
People across the nation have been sending their love and support to Deborah James following her announcement that she’s moved to hospice care after being diagnosied with bowel cancer in 2016.
Stars including Susanna Reid, Lorraine Kelly, Dan Walker and Naga Munchetty are among those who have written heartfelt messages in her honour, as she informed her followers on social media that ‘the time has come to say goodbye’.
The BBC broadcaster, who hosted You, Me & The Big C, announced that she had set up the Bowelbabe Fund for Cancer Research UK, to raise money for clinical trials, research and to raise awareness of bowel cancer.
With the amount surpassing £800,000 since the fundraiser was set up last night, on Tuesday’s Good Morning Britain, presenter Charlotte Hawkins said that Deborah, 40, has been ‘massively inspirational in raising the profile of bowel cancer’, as she described the fund as ‘an amazing thing to do’.
Susanna dubbed Deborah ‘hugely inspirational and hugely influential’, emphasising how much of a ‘positive effect’ the fund will have as she sent her love to the broadcaster.
Richard Madeley praised her on how ‘extraordinarily frank and open’ she has been throughout her journey, after Deborah wrote in her recent social media post: ‘You are all incredible, thank you for playing your part in my journey. No regrets.’
On Twitter, Lorraine Kelly showered her with love, writing in response to her announcement about going into hospice care: ‘Brave bright beautiful woman and her campaigning has saved lives. Honoured to know you lovely Deborah @bowelbabe – love you.’
BBC Breakfast host Dan Walker also responded to the message, writing: ‘Heartbreaking news Deborah. Thinking of you and your family. Thank you for opening up so many important conversations over the last few years.’
‘Deborah you have changed lives and opened up conversations that will help so many people. What a legacy,’ tweeted presenter Gabby Logan.
Presenter Bev Turner celebrated Deborah as a ‘hero’, as she penned: ‘Some people change the conversation. @bowelbabe is one of those heroes.
‘Debs, your courage, openness and sense of fun are unparalleled. Sending love to you and your beautiful family.’
BBC Breakfast’s Naga described Deborah’s update as ‘heartbreaking’, as she added: ‘I wish you love and peace @bowelbabe xx.’
Countdown’s Susie Dent told Deborah that her ‘laughter and dancing have lit up the world’, as she thanked her ‘for sharing them with us’.
On Instagram, Katie Piper commented underneath her post, writing: ‘You changed so many peoples lives, you’ve spread so much joy and kindness. An ever lasting impact.’
‘I will raise a glass to you. Sending my love and all I can to you and your loves,’ added Great British Bake Off star Candice Brown.
This year, Deborah has spent much of her time in hospital, after experiencing a serious bleed and infections.
During a visit from Lorraine in April, Deborah told her: ‘If I’m being honest, I don’t really know how I’m alive.’
The broadcaster is married to Sebastien Bowen and they share two children.
