The latest DC Black Label miniseries Suicide Squad: Get Joker has some of the most ruthless supervillains and antiheroes in this version of the DC Universe go on the hunt for the Clown Prince of Crime in the shadiest corners of Gotham City. While Amanda Waller retains her role as Task Force X’s overseer, coercing brutal figures towards completing their deadly mission in exchange for clemency, the roster is far different than the current one running around the main DCU.
Now, here is everyone who Waller drafts onto this lineup of Task Force X in Suicide Squad: Get Joker #1 by Brian Azzarello, Alex Maleev, Matt Hollingsworth and Jared K. Fletcher in order to kill Batman’s most notorious supervillain.
Jason Todd
Rather than Peacemaker or Rick Flag, Waller’s field commander for this Suicide Squad is none other than Jason Todd. Imprisoned for his vigilante activities as Red Hood and estranged from the rest of the Bat-Family, Jason is both as haunted and violent as ever when Waller approaches him to join her team.
One vital aspect from Jason’s main DCU history that is retained for Get Joker is that it was the Clown Prince of Crime that cut Jason’s tenure as Robin short by murdering him. Mysteriously brought back to life before becoming Red Hood, Jason’s Suicide Squad mission gives him the opportunity to avenge his own death.
Harley Quinn
The last person recruited for Waller’s team has an even more personal grudge against the Joker than Jason: Harley Quinn. Harley is eager to pay back the Joker for the years of abuse and emotional torment she endured at his hands, though Jason believes she is too unstable for the team.
Despite Jason’s vocal misgivings, he is overruled by Waller who believes Harley to be a valuable asset given her prolonged longevity with the Joker and knowledge of how he operates while Harley sees this assignment as her last mission before retiring to parts unknown.
Silver Banshee
One of the most powerful members of the team is the old Superman villain Silver Banshee, with Waller speculating that the origins of her powers are supernatural by nature as Jason is briefed on her inclusion.
Banshee is handpicked given her powers’ effect on sound, with her able to absorb and redirect sound waves around her. With that in mind, Silver Banshee is able to help mask the Suicide Squad’s movements as they infiltrate Gotham to get a jump on the Joker.
Plastique
Silver Banshee isn’t the only metahuman on the Suicide Squad, with Waller recruiting the supervillain Plastique to join the ensemble. Waller dismissively labels Plastique a terrorist that is able to make things explode simply by coming into physical contact with them, not unlike X-Men’s Gambit though she was created years earlier by Gerry Conway and Pat Broderick.
Though Plastique brings extra firepower to the team, she keeps a relatively low profile in comparison to the rest of the team when they first infiltrate Gotham in order to better catch the Joker unaware before the plan inevitably falls apart.
Firefly
The first person that Waller introduces Jason to as the team starts to come together is the Gotham-based supervillain Firefly. Visibly scarred from his pyromaniac tendencies and years of committing arson, Firefly is another wild card on a team full of them.
Firefly is also the first casualty of the mission, at least of the villains and antiheroes deployed on the field. After ambushing Waller in her hotel room, the Joker acquires the controls to the bombs implanted in the Suicide Squad and uses it to make Firefly combust as the rest of the team watches horrified.
Toyman
Serving as the team’s wheelman and quartermaster is the longtime Superman antagonist the Toyman, who doesn’t appear in prison as the team is recruited but instead makes a rendezvous with them inside of Gotham.
While there have been several iterations of Toyman throughout DC history, some heroic and some villainous, this incarnation announces himself as the original Toyman Winslow Schott. So far, Toyman’s gear has been relatively low-key given his usual bag of tricks and he transports the team in a nondescript, small truck.
Wild Dog
Jason Todd isn’t the only gun-toting antihero on the team, with Wild Dog recruited by the Suicide Squad to help bolster Task Force X’s firepower. Though Jason maintains that he doesn’t actually know Wild Dog at all, Waller refers to him as the biggest vigilante in Illinois’ Quad Cities.
There has been some controversy about Get Joker‘s depiction of Wild Dog, with the character spouting alt-right talking points while bragging about getting arrested for taking on the federal government, which his co-creator Terry Beatty has publicly condemned.
New Characters
While the bulk of this Suicide Squad has clear counterparts to the main DCU, there are several new villains introduced by Waller onto the DC Black Label team, with each of them possessing their own superhuman abilities.
An ex-soldier nicknamed Pebbles was injected with an experimental serum that boosts his endurance to superhuman levels, able to take bullets directly to the head. Meow Meow is a Japanese villain able to necrotize tissue on contact and Yonder Man is the team’s resident teleporter.
Now, this team of unlikely allies will have to work together to save their lives and earn their freedom before the Joker takes both, permanently.
