David Beckham left off New Year Honours List again

David Beckham has once again been left off the New Year Honours List as his gruelling wait for a knighthood goes on. The former England captain has long been optimistic that he will one day receive the nod on the basis of all he has given to football and sport but just like previous years, the 47-year-old is enduring disappointment again.

Beckham was handed an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List back in 2003.

Ten years later, the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid winger was caught up in the Ingenious tax avoidance scheme before being added back to the official recommendations list in 2021 after his name was cleared by HMRC.

The Inter Miami owner has endured a busy year which has included fierce criticism from the LGBTQ+ community for his involvement at the Qatar World Cup.

Unfortunately for Beckham, despite clearing his name of any wrongdoing in 2021, he has once again missed out as his wait for a knighthood rumbles on.

The New Years Honours List does include several notable sportsman and sportswomen following some amazing personal stories from throughout the year.

Key members of the England Lionesses football team have been honoured for their “outstanding performance” at the European Championships in the summer.

Captain Leah Williamson is set to receive an OBE for his leadership and performances at the tournament.

Meanwhile, star player Lucy Bronze, golden boot Beth Mead, and England women’s top international goal scorer Ellen White are all set to receive MBEs.

Pat Jennings is also set to receive a CBE for his football and charity service in Northern Ireland.

Liverpool and Scotland defender Andy Robertson is set to receive an MBE for his work with young people

Meanwhile, former Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara is also in line for an MBE due to his charity work and anti-racism work.

Beckham has previously declared receiving his OBE was among the best moments of his life.

“The most special moment for me was to receive my OBE,” he said. “I took my grandparents with me, who were the ones that really brought me up to be a huge royalist and a fan of the royal family, and obviously I had my wife there as well.

“To step up, to get my honour, but then also Her Majesty, to ask questions, to talk, I was so lucky that I was able to have a few moments like that in my life, to be around Her Majesty.

“Because we can all see with the love that has been shown, how special she is and how special she was and the legacy that she leaves behind.”
