Dashcam footage divides opinion as car tries to join motorway in front of lorry

DASHCAM footage of a car apparently struggling to join a motorway from a slip road ahead of a lorry has divided opinion – as viewers slam both drivers.

The video – shot from the lorry cab – shows the small white car failing to merge onto the motorway despite a long run in – eventually running out of slip road and being forced to drive along the hard shoulder.

The video is captioned “How many miles you need to join the traffic?”, suggesting the person who posted it blames the car driver for dithering rather than moving across into space in front of the lorry.

Some viewers have pointed out the lorry appears to speed up and doesn’t allow the car to merge onto the motorway.

However, many people in the comments believe that the lorry didn’t slow down because the white car seemed unsure about performing the manoeuvre.

It’s also possible that the white car didn’t put on its indicators, so the lorry wasn’t aware that the vehicle was trying to join the motorway.

Man overtakes over 50 queuing cars because he knows the Highway Code

The Highway Code says: “When you join the motorway, you will normally approach it from a road on the left (a slip road) or from an adjoining motorway.

“You should give priority to traffic already on the motorway, check the traffic on the motorway and match your speed to fit safely into the traffic flow in the left-hand lane.

“[Don’t] cross solid white lines that separate lanes or use the hard shoulder.

“Stay on the slip road if it continues as an extra lane on the motorway.”

The video was uploaded to TikTok by @funnfactory1 and has had thousands of views.

But, viewers are divided on who’s on the right.

One said: ” Was it necessary to put your foot down? It could be a young person still nervous about driving on a motorway. Well done, you, big man.”

Another said: “Cam driver TOTALLY at fault here – let the car in!!!!”

A third pointed out: “People saying he speeded up. No, he didn’t. It’s a lorry doing 56 mph. You lot need to know how long it takes a fully loaded lorry to get up to speed.”

A fourth said: “A lorry doing 60mph car can do 70mph car should have put his foot down.”

A fifth pointed out: “Was it necessary to put your foot down? It could be a young person still nervous about driving on a motorway. Well done you, big man

This comes after drivers were warned that running out of fuel could cost them a £5,000 fine and nine penalty points.
