Damian Lewis remembers ‘perfect’ Helen McCrory at poetry night dedicated to her
Damian Lewis remembered his late wife Helen McCrory at a poetry event held in her memory this week at the National Theatre.
Damian, 50, joined Allie Esiri for the event, alongside other special guests including Simon Russell Beale, Lesley Sharp and Fay Ripley.
He performed a reading of various poem, including Invisible Kisses by Lemn Sissay, To Autumn by John Keats, and finishing the night with Everything Is Going To Be All Right by Derek Mahon.
A video of the Peaky Blinders star, who died in April last year, was also played during the A Poet For Every Day Of The Year event. She was shown reading the poem Wild Geese by Mary Oliver.
The actor reportedly said: ‘This evening is dedicated to her and it’s perfect, because Helen loved the National Theatre.
‘One person whose thunder would absolutely not be stolen was Helen McCrory.’
McCrory died in April after battling cancer, at the age of 52.
‘I’m heartbroken to announce that after an heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family,’ Damian wrote at the time.
‘She died as she lived. Fearlessly. God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly.
‘Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you.’
The couple met when they were both performing in Five Gold Rings at London’s Almeida Theatre in 2003.
They married in July 2007 in a ceremony held at Kensington and Chelsea Registry Office.
They shared two children together, daughter Manon and son Gulliver, with the family living in London together.
McCrory championed the importance of charity work in one of her final TV interviews, with Damian proudly by her side.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain on March 12, the Harry Potter star praised the work of the Prince’s Trust during the pandemic.
