Dami Im’s healthy morning routine

Singer Dami Im reveals why she enjoys working out in the morning and why tending to her garden helps with her general wellbeing.

Korean-born singer-songwriter Dami Im knows a thing or two about putting time, effort, heart and soul into something you love to bring it to life.

Indeed, if you’ve never done it, it’s hard to imagine just how satisfying it must be to produce

something as epic, and personal, as an album of your own music.

Im has just released her sixth album, My Reality, which is her first album of completely original material since 2014’s Heart Beats, the second collection of music she released after winning the fifth season of The X Factor Australia in 2013.

At Im’s home in Brisbane, that same level of nurturing something to life is also applied to growing her own organic food.

“As soon as I’m up in the morning, I go out to my backyard to look at my veggie garden and see how everything is doing,” she says.

Im is also a big believer in starting your day off right with some form of exercise, which is her second port of call once the gardening gets done.

“I water and give some love to what I’m growing, then I get changed to go to my pilates class or go for a walk,” she says.

“I’ve never been a sporty, fit kind of person, but I try and do some form of workout in

the morning so I don’t have to think about it for the rest of the day.”

Im also says a bit of morning exercise is the perfect way to get her mind focused and start the day off with the right frame of mind.

“I find it helps me mentally when my body is feeling healthy and active. Everything is affected like a domino, so I try to look after my body so the rest of myself can be happy and balanced,” she adds.

Part of that balance includes getting a decent rest at night, and adhering to a regular sleep routine.

“I try and go to bed around the same time every night and wake up at a similar time,” she says.

“Even if I have a day off and can sleep in, sticking to a similar pattern helps my body feel better throughout the day.”

Five foods she can’t live without

“Kimchi, rice, gochujang (Korean chilli paste), avocados and hot chips.”

Foods she stays away from

“I don’t follow anything too strict on my diet but I generally try and eat a good balance of fresh vegetables and proteins and not go too crazy on carbs and sugary foods.”

Best advice she’s ever been given

“‘Get a compost bin’! That was only less than a year ago, but honestly that changed my life. I love being able to grow some of my own food and making use of the waste to make more good things.”
