Cruise passengers urged to ‘avoid’ certain rooms

A new cruise guest took to Reddit to ask for advice on choosing a room. They said they had “no idea” what a good cabin was.

Reddit user ‘bluGill’ said: “Until you go on a few cruises, you don’t know what you like. Start with the ship deck plan though. If you don’t know what is near your cabin, you can’t make a good choice.”

Guests can usually find the ship’s deck plan on the cruise line’s website and it should have all the room numbers on.

Different decks will have different activities and guests can choose a room near the restaurant or another amenity such as the pool.

Rooms on higher floors could be more expensive even if the cabin is the same size as one on a lower deck.

‘bluGill’ added: “Many people insist (the room) should have cabins on all sides, including above and below as you don’t want noise from activities.

“If you are below a nightclub, it can be noisy in your room until late. If you are above the theatre it will be loud as well, but if you are going to the shows anyway, it might be ok.”

The ship’s theatre may even be noisy during the day as the performers will usually rehearse in the morning or afternoon.

Some guests say that rooms below the pool deck are also particularly noisy as the crew set up the pool loungers very early in the morning.

They added: “Hallways to your room will be narrow. If you get claustrophobic, make sure you are near the stairs/elevators so you can get to the wider halls in more public spaces quickly.

“Those areas tend to be noisy, so that’s a good reason to avoid those rooms.”
People will use the elevators at all hours of the day so rooms close to the lifts could be very noisy even if they are convenient.

Cruises can be tricky for passengers who suffer from claustrophobia and it could be a good idea to pay for a balcony room if that’s the case.

Some passengers like to have a room that’s near the ship’s buffet so they can access breakfast quickly.

Rooms on the highest floors are usually the most expensive as they have the best views and biggest balconies.

Guests can pay for a suite which could even come with its own butler or personal assistant on some cruise lines.

If Britons are travelling as a family, they might like to book connecting rooms so they can create a larger space.

Connecting rooms can be noisier due to the internal door but are a great way to enjoy a family holiday.
