If you love collecting your Costa Coffee loyalty ‘beans’ to nab a free drink, get set for some changes coming to the scheme this summer – and you’ll need to spend more to get a freebie.

The changes come hot on the heels of Costa being slammed for charging extra for its drinks in hospitals.

The Costa Club loyalty scheme currently lets you collect a ‘bean’ token – or two if you do your bit for the environment and take a reusable cup – for every ‘handcrafted’ drink you buy, including those out of Costa Express machines.

Collect eight beans and – hey presto – you can claim a free drink.

But the scheme is undergoing a revamp this summer and from August you’ll need to spend more before you can claim your freebie.

So what are the changes?

Here’s what you need to know.

What is the major change?

From August 1, 2023, you’ll need to collect ten beans to get your free drink.

This means you’ll need to by two extra drinks – or one if you’re using a resuable cup.

The change will apply to both Costa Club physical cards and the app.

What are the other changes?

It’s not all bad news, as they are also launching ‘Treat Drop’ as part of the Club. Costa says: ‘Starting soon, we’ll give you a little surprise, just for you’.

The company adds: ‘The launch of Treat Drop is the first of many rewards we’re looking to launch that provide members with personalised offers, more often, reflecting the food and drink they love at Costa Coffee.’

Costa says it will continue to give members a free cake on their birthday and members can earn beans when referring a friend to Costa Club.

The firm has a dedicated page where you can find out more.
